25+ Epic Places to Elope in Colorado
Want to Elope in Colorado? Well, you’ll need a location. Colorado is full of amazing places to elope including iconic mountain ranges, national parks, epic backpacking destinations, and views that you can drive up to. You can find anywhere in the state’s gorgeous Rocky Mountains to have the adventure you’ve been dreaming up. Colorado is stunning year-round, whether you want summer sunshine and glowing grassy fields or snowy mountain tops in the winter (wear your base layers).
Of course, you’ve heard of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Maroon Bells, and Telluride as stunning places to elope, but we’re going to clue you in to some of the less traveled spots too. Don’t worry, we’ll drop some knowledge about the well-known areas too – and tell you how to avoid the crowds.
How to Use Our Colorado Elopement Location Guide
Not only are we going to tell you the best places to go, but we’re making this guide your one-stop shop for elopement locations in Colorado by including everything we could think of for each location. From how far it is to the airport, to where to book your hotel, to how much snow to expect in the winter, we got you covered!!
The other reason this guide is going to knock your socks off? We’re going to sort these destinations by how much of an adventure you’re committing to. Some of these spots are literally drive up and walk out, and some mean you’re heading into the woods with a backpack or driving on a 4-wheel road. It’s about the journey as much as the destination, and we know you adventure lovers will be all about this.
Epic Views from a Parking Lot
Yup, you read that right. There are tons of places to elope in Colorado where all you need to do is get out of the car. No hiking and you could even bring a picnic basket without needing to load it into your backpacking kit. Bonus, you don’t have to pack your dress or suit either, just wear it on the drive from your lodging.

Locations with a 3-5 mile Hike and Mountain Views
Opting for an elopement location with a 3-5 mile hike and stunning mountain views adds an extra layer of excitement to your special day. While we suggest some locations below, there are always more secluded and lesser-known locations your Colorado photographer can walk you through. In order to protect these locations, more well-known ones will be discussed. If you see somewhere you love, but are hesitant about the crowds, then ask your photographer if they suggest another location similar to the one you’re loving. At all of the locations we mention, please remember to leave no trace and stay on the trail.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
While it’s one of the most stunning areas in Colorado, it’s not as well known as many of the others on this list! Viewpoints in the park offer overlooks surrounded by black granite walls and drop-offs down into the canyon. It’s prettiest during sunset and sunrise! We recommend checking out Chasm View, Painted Wall View, Exclamation Point, and Pulpit Rock Overlook when you are planning your elopement location.

- Closest Cities: Crawford (North Rim), Montrose (South Rim)
- County (you’ll need this for your marriage license): Montrose County
- Distance from DIA: 278 miles (approx. 5hrs 20mins) to North Rim via I-70, 309 miles (approx. 6hrs) to North Rim via hwy 285 & hwy 50, and 295 miles (approx. 5hrs 30mins) to South Rim via hwy 285 & hwy 50

The roads to the South Rim past the visitor center are closed during the winter, and the roads to the North Rim and East Portal are closed during the winter. They open in spring each year, depending on road conditions.
- Winter Snowpack Average: 5-8”
- Permit or Reservation Requirements: To have your elopement in Black Canyon of the Gunnison, you’ll need a Special Use Permit which costs $100 to apply for, and you have to apply via mail. Once your permit is approved, there may be more fees applied depending on the size of the group you are taking in for your elopement. Each vehicle must also pay to enter the park.
- Accessibility: Many of the small parking lots along the roads on the South and North Rim of the canyon are accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. However, the trails to the viewpoints themselves are largely not. Expect rocky terrain that can be steep in some areas depending on the hikes you choose to take.
- Max Group Size: While fees range based on the number of guests you have, we do not recommend a group larger than 10 for this location due to parking lot sizes and access to the overlook locations.
- Price: $100 for permit application, $50-150 additional fee, and $30/vehicle for entrance into the park.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
Colorado is famous for the incredible Great Sand Dunes National Park in Southern Colorado near Alamosa. There is nothing quite like the field of rolling dunes with the snow-capped mountains in the background. The Sand Dunes are best enjoyed in the spring and fall, and make sure not to head out into the Dunes in the middle of the day as the sand can hit 150 degrees!! The seasonal Medano Creek flows past the dunes during May and June, making those the most popular months for visitors.
- Distance from Parking to Elopement Location: Between ½ mile and 1 mile depending on the ceremony site you use.

- Summer High/Low Avg. (°F): 83° / 48°
- Winter High/Low Avg. (°F): 34° / -3°
- Subject to Winter Traction Laws: No. Some of the roads through the park close during the winter, like the Medano Pass Primitive Road. It is usually accessible through the Castle Creek Picnic area by mid-April in a high-clearance AWD/4WD vehicle.
- Winter Snowpack Average: 8-10”
- Permit or Reservation Requirements: You’ll need a Special Use Permit to have your elopement at the Great Sand Dunes. They are also not allowed to happen at parking lots, on trails, etc. Confirm with the park rangers where your ceremony is allowed to take place. Your photographer and other vendors will need a Commercial Use Authorization from the park.

Roxborough Park
If Garden of the Gods is up your alley because of the incredible red rock formations, Roxborough Park should be on your list as well. - Winter High/Low Avg. (°F): 45° / 18°
- Subject to Winter Traction Laws: No. The parking lots and roads into the park are accessible all winter. But, there is a stretch of dirt road that it is helpful to have an AWD vehicle on in case of mud or snow.
- Winter Snowpack Average: 2-5”
- Permit or Reservation Requirements: You’ll need to apply for and reserve a ceremony site with Roxborough Park directly. The ceremony sites range from $75-300 based on the day of the week and which site you choose, and you’ll need to pay a $10 application fee and a special use authorization fee of $55 on top of the site rental fee. All of those fees are due when you make the reservation. Photographers will also need a separate quarterly commercial photography permit.
- Accessibility: The parking lot and visitor center are accessible, and the main trail is wide, flat, and well-maintained. It would be possible to push a stroller with larger wheels, and potentially some wheelchairs. When to Elope in Colorado
Spring
The late spring in Colorado brings snowmelt season in the high country, late season skiing at the resorts, and balmy 60-70-degree days near Denver and the lower foothills. If you want those big epic mountain views, most of the access roads, trails, and summer parking areas will still be closed. But, if you want snow, this can be a good time to visit the high country in more accessible areas without winter’s punishing cold temperatures. It will still be 40-50 degrees at higher elevations, and snow storms and winter temperatures are still possible.
If you’re planning a spring elopement in Colorado, be prepared to roll with unpredictable weather changes, from sunny bluebird skies to freezing blizzards! If you don’t already own a good jacket, you’ll need one, and some long underwear to layer under your elopement outfits is a good idea.
Summer
By mid-July, accessibility gets a lot better in the high country as the snow melts off. If you’re looking at one of the OHV trails or long hikes on this list, you’ll want to wait until at least July or August for your elopement. Unpredictable thunderstorms can roll through the peaks quickly in the summer, so it is best to plan any long mountain excursions for sunrise or early morning. The drive-up view locations are stunning at sunset though!
If you’re planning a summer elopement in the Colorado mountains, bring mosquito and tick repellant, don’t forget the sunscreen, and invest in a solid pair of hiking boots. You can expect temperatures at high elevations to be in the mid 60’s to 70’s with the occasional day hitting 85.
Fall
Fall is one of the prettiest seasons in Colorado, and comes with some of the best weather! The front range area gets sunny 70 degree days with a lower risk of thunderstorms than the monsoon season in mid-summer. Many trails stay accessible in the high country until mid-October when the snowstorms start. Denver-area and the front range will start seeing snow from late October to early November.
The aspens in Colorado start turning at the high elevations in early to mid-September and will often stay golden yellow for a few weeks. The lower elevations will turn anywhere from mid to late September and sometimes don’t budge until the first week of October. There’s not really a good way of predicting when the leaves will turn, but you just might get lucky!!
You’ll want to pack sunscreen, light warm layers, and keep the bug spray handy in Colorado in the fall. Keep an eye on the weather in case you get a day where there’s a cold snap or one of the early snowstorms!
Winter
Winter elopements in Colorado can be truly magical! If your dream is to say “I do” surrounded by snow, or even, in a blizzard, winter is for you. While some areas aren’t as accessible, there are still spots with incredible views that you can drive to. If you’re up for a snowshoeing adventure, a lot of the hikes in our short hike section make for great winter trails too!
Depending on where you are headed, you’ll want warm base layers, jackets, gloves, and waterproof snow boots to elope in Colorado in the winter. Temperatures at high elevations can be in the single digits, and even the warmest days don’t top 30 to 40 degrees. It gets cold fast once the sun sets, so plan your excursions during daylight hours! While it might seem counterintuitive, you still need to keep the sunscreen handy during the winter. Especially if there’s snow on the ground, you can get sunburned from the reflection of the snow from the sun.
Tips for Traveling in Colorado
Many of the locations listed in our travel guide are near I-70, a large highway heading into the mountains from Denver. It has traction laws from September through May and is prone to massive amounts of seasonal traffic. Ski season clogs the highways on weekend mornings, and even in the summer, there is traffic heading up for hiking and other outdoor activities. Plan to leave early in the morning, or give yourself extra time anytime you’re traveling into the mountains on weekends.
In the winter, snowstorms can create ice and packed snow on high-elevation roads. Try and stay near to your elopement location if you are getting married here in the winter so you don’t have to drive in or out of the mountains during a storm. Renting an AWD or 4WD car is a must as well!
Fall leaf season starts in September and goes through the end of October. Plan for high traffic into the mountain areas, and difficulty finding lodging in areas like Vail and Crested Butte which are famous for their beautiful leaf changes.
While the Denver International Airport is a huge travel hub from surrounding states, don’t forget to look into local airports, especially for accessing the southern mountain areas of Colorado like Telluride, Ouray, and Durango.
Remember, your Colorado vendors are a great resource for advice on traveling and where to go during different seasons too. Make sure you listen to their advice when you’re planning your elopement!
