About This Winter Colorado Elopement

jumping over a broom on your wedding day

Photography by Katie Dawn Photo

“We all packed in a car and headed up to Blue Lakes near Breckenridge, CO, thinking it would be a good alternative to Loveland Pass, because it might be less windy and frigid- we were wrong. We were all laughing and screaming from the crazy wind up at the ceremony site where Pete and Bre said their handwritten vows and then jumped a broom. We drove down the mountain a bit to get somewhere less windy to pop some champagne and take some more photos that wasn’t quite so miserably windy.

After the sun had set, we headed back to Breck to have a private dinner, cake cutting, license signing, and little first dance at a little outdoor igloo structure at Gravity Haus. It was a simple day full of family heirlooms, mama love, DIY decor, cake, and bouquets, and it was perfect for the low-key people that Pete and Bre are.” [Katie, the photographer]

Top Tip Eloping in Colorado During the Winter

“Bundle up! Eloping anywhere in Colorado is going to be cold, but scenic spots with good views are usually really windy, so wear lots of layers. Leggings under the dress, wool socks, gloves, thick coats, and hand warmers to put in your pockets are all a necessity!” [Katie, the photographer]

Deciding What to Include on Your Wedding Day

“It’s your day, so do whatever you want. If you want to go the traditional route, go for it. If you want to include something more unconventional, elopements are perfect for that. Or, you can come up with something completely new and unique to you and your love! Just do whatever truly suits you, not what’s expected of you.” [Katie, the photographer]

Incorporating Family During Your Elopement

“Pete’s dad passed recently, so he wore pink socks just like his dad did on his own wedding. Bre’s mom raised her, and she wore her mom’s fur coat to keep warm in the windy Colorado winter. To keep other friends and family involved in their elopement, Pete and his mom Facetimed his brother, and Bre read letters from their friends out loud before the ceremony.” [Katie, the photographer]

Personalizing Your Wedding Day

“I loved how everything was DIYed. I love when couples and their friends/family help to put the day together. I think it makes everything so much more personal and special when everything that’s involved with the day has a unique story behind it and when someone special goes to the effort to make something with you in mind.” [Katie, the photographer]
