Surprise Proposal at Garden of The Gods

Derek originally wanted to propose to Melissa in Kauai, but his original plans changed. Thankfully, Trisha from Xsperience Photography planned a styled session featuring Derek and Melissa, and this was his perfect chance to surprise Melissa with a proposal at Garden of the Gods.

“I love when editorial shoots also serve as beautiful memories and images for real couples! Little did we both know, this was Derek’s answer from the Universe for a new proposal plan. He contacted me and asked if I’d be willing to document him proposing to the love of his life? Ummmm yeah!!!!” [Trisha]

Tips for Planning a Proposal at The Garden of Gods

When it comes to planning a surprise proposal, planning is key. You’ll want to have clear communication with your photographer, so they know exactly when you’re going to pop the question to your partner.

“Like any popular tourist destination, parking can be limited so it’s best to have a photographer with you or one who is flexible with the location in case you have to adjust location or time a bit. Discuss your plan with the photographer ahead of time, so he/she is either hidden and ready for the moment, or is there discreetly making your story unfold.” [Trisha]

Another thing you’ll want to think about is HOW you’re going to ask. During this surprise proposal at Garden of the Gods, Derek asked right after their “mock” vows for the styled shoot.

Still, wondering how to pop the question? Check out our how to propose guide.

The Moment The Question Was Asked

The best moment during this shoot was the moment Derek popped the question. We love how Trisha captured Melissa’s reaction. It was freezing cold during this proposal at Garden of the Gods, and we love the snow surrounding the couple. Despite how cold it was, these two were all snuggles and smiles, showing off Melissa’s gorgeous engagement ring (which Derek’s company, Shane Company, designed)!

“She told me she didn’t think he’d take that part of the styled elopement seriously, so she wasn’t expecting much. But then he began reading a well-written poem. It was a heartfelt moment in itself just seeing how much she appreciated his effort. The moment when he read the last part of the poem and the leading line ended with “life”…you could then see the realization in Melissa’s eyes that “will you be my wife” was a clear ending to the poem!” [Trisha]

Permits For Your Garden of The Gods Experience

When you’re considering WHERE you’re going to propose, you want to make sure you have the proper permits for your location.

“Garden of the Gods does not require a photography permit for certain areas in the park, but it is recommended to contact the park prior because this is an ever-changing discussion. They have considered an annual or one-time permit for commercial photography which is any photography that advertises or makes a profit off the shoot. But if you are proposing and not paying a professional photographer you are good to go!” [Trisha]
