Heartwarming Inclement Elopement in Reykjavík, Iceland | Lindsay & Simon
When a bride and groom hail from different countries and their families are spread across multiple continents, deciding where to say “I do” can present quite the predicament. This couple elected to forgo both of their homelands and instead escaped to Iceland for a true elopement adventure! Simon and Lindsay worked with Pink Iceland to coordinate their special day and relied upon photographer Dee van der Merwe to capture every moment.
“The morning of their wedding, Reykjavík had a light snowfall… but by the time we arrived at the ceremony location, a light rain had set in,” Dee recalls. “I knew that Iceland would be freezing, but I didn’t anticipate a rainy day. Every photographer hopes for [a] romantic afternoon golden hour, but this was not the case.” The bride had not packed a coat for the day, hopeful that a childhood spent in the coldest areas of the United States would adequately prepare her for Iceland’s climate. “…the poor girl just about froze to death at the ceremony,” Dee says. “The rain seemed to make the temperature even colder than it was [which was] -6º Celsius. Eventually our coordinator for the day gave Lindsay a massive jacket to wear… Preparation is key! Being armed with the right equipment for any adventure makes the adventure run smoothly.” The remainder of the ceremony unfolded without a hitch, and Dee remarks, “There were so many tears during the ceremony, it was beautiful to witness.”
Before returning to Reykjavík, the newlyweds created memories against some of the most awe-inspiring backdrops. They took full advantage of Iceland’s diverse landscapes and dodged the crowds to obtain truly mesmerizing images. “Even through rain and subzero temperatures in the snow, the wedding, scenery, and photos were everything we’d dreamed!” Lindsay says.

“[The couple met online] in 2012. Lindsay agreed to go on a date with Simon because he had a really cute Saint Bernard dog in his profile photos who she wanted to meet… [they] are complete opposites in many ways but complement each other well. They both share a sense of adventure…”
“Simon is Australian and Lindsay is from the USA, and neither could decide which of the two countries would be best for their wedding, so the pair ran away to Iceland and then held wonderful celebrations in each of their home cities with their friends and family after the elopement.”
“The two chose this destination not only because of its wild beauty but also because as expert divers, they were able to dive at Silfra, a place where you are able to touch the tectonic plates of Europe and North America at one time.”
“…travels continued with a romantic honeymoon through Barcelona [and] Amsterdam and two post-wedding celebrations in Atlanta and Brisbane for family and friends.”
