Where Water and Wilderness Met: Christina and Albert’s Iceland Elopement

In September, Christina and Albert returned to Iceland not as travelers, but as a couple ready to be married in a place that already held deep meaning for them. They began the day at Seljalandsfoss Horizons Cabins, surrounded by open land and waterfalls, before traveling deep into the highlands by Super Jeep. The pace of the day moved between stillness and adventure, with long stretches of driving, river crossings, hiking, and moments of pause that allowed the experience to settle.

The day was built around privacy, trust in local expertise, and flexibility. From a secluded waterfall ceremony to wind-heavy cliffs and rain-soaked coastlines, Christina and Albert embraced Iceland as it presented itself, rather than trying to control it.

Christina and Albert had been engaged for over a year before deciding to elope. Traditional wedding planning never felt right to them. They shared that weddings had begun to feel more like performances or financial obligations rather than a meaningful union, and neither of them had a clear vision for a conventional celebration.

“We both feel weddings have turned into an excuse for people to party, for businesses to overcharge couples for their services, and for pleasing other people,” the couple explains. “Weddings seem to have lost the meaning of two people coming together.”

The idea of eloping emerged slowly. Initially, they considered bringing their wedding attire on a honeymoon to Iceland and doing a photo session. When Christina shared the idea with her mother, she suggested that they elope instead. That conversation shifted everything. While Christina loved the idea immediately, Albert wanted to make sure she would be okay not having her father present. After speaking with her dad and receiving his support, they chose to marry on his birthday, September 8, as a way to honor him from afar.

Their relationship with Iceland began earlier that year, during a winter trip in January. They traveled around the country by car, navigating snow and ice for the first time. One night, while walking back from a hot spring, Christina noticed the sky glowing green. As she realized they were standing beneath the Northern Lights, Albert proposed. That moment anchored Iceland as a place of emotional significance for them long before wedding planning began.

Eloping allowed Christina and Albert to remove expectations, timelines, and outside pressure. They described eloping as something deeply personal, a way to create a story that belonged entirely to them. “There is something magical about eloping. You truly feel you are doing something for yourself and creating your own unique story.”

Their Vision & Planning Process

Planning began with video calls where Christina and Albert shared their vision and priorities. Lia presented multiple regions and options, explaining how each area functioned logistically and visually. Once the couple chose their locations, Lia handled vendor communication, scheduling, and coordination.

“Her services allowed me to feel like a full bride without the stress of a wedding.” Christina said.

Hair and makeup were done by Margrét Magnús, florals by Thordiz Sofia, and the ceremony was officiated by Erla Sigurlaug, a humanist celebrant. Christina FaceTimed with both her hair and makeup artist and her officiant ahead of time, sharing reference photos and completing written assignments that helped Erla shape a ceremony rooted in who they are as a couple.

Lia also guided Christina and Albert through the legal process of getting married in Iceland, including documentation requirements and how to obtain their marriage certificate. This support removed uncertainty and allowed them to focus on the experience rather than paperwork.

In addition to coordinating logistics, Lia and her team guided Christina and Albert through land access and Leave No Trace considerations specific to Iceland. They explained which locations required permission, how protected areas like Þórsmörk function, and why access often requires licensed guides and Super Jeeps. Respecting private land, keeping sensitive locations undisclosed, and minimizing impact were built into the planning process, allowing the couple to move through remote landscapes with care and confidence.

Iceland was not just a scenic backdrop for Christina and Albert. It was already tied to one of the most significant moments of their relationship. Their engagement under the Northern Lights, their time spent traveling the country together, and their connection to the culture and landscape made returning there feel natural.

They shared that being in Iceland made them feel excited about planning a wedding for the first time. The country felt meaningful rather than performative. It offered space, privacy, and a sense of grounding that they did not associate with traditional wedding venues.

Þórsmörk valley, specifically, was suggested by Lia. The combination of remoteness, dramatic terrain, and the journey required to reach it appealed to Christina and Albert immediately. The idea of hiking to a waterfall in their wedding attire felt like a story they wanted to tell, one rooted in experience rather than spectacle.

Beginning the Day at Seljalandsfoss Horizons Cabins

Christina and Albert began their day at Seljalandsfoss Horizons Cabins, joined by their two best friends who were traveling Iceland in a camper van. Christina got ready in the living area of the cabin, as the bathroom only had a small face mirror. Hair and makeup unfolded calmly, without any sense of rush.

Before leaving the cabins, Christina FaceTimed her parents. It was the middle of the night where they lived, but they wanted to be present. She wished her father a happy birthday and showed them her dress. They were the first people to see her that morning, creating a quiet moment of connection before the day began.

Their first look took place just outside the cabins, with the Drífandi waterfall behind them. Christina played “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, a song Albert had long associated with her. The moment was intentionally simple and private, shaped by the landscape rather than styling. Afterward, they checked out of the cabin and began their journey into the highlands.

Journey into Þórsmörk Valley

The group met their guide from Midgard Adventure at Laufey Bistro before transferring into a Super Jeep. From there, the pace shifted. River crossings, uneven roads, and changing conditions required full attention and trust in the guide.

They crossed rivers both by vehicle and on foot before hiking a short trail to reach the ceremony location. The remoteness of the valley was apparent immediately. There were no other people, no structures, and no noise beyond the water and wind.

Ceremony at a Private Waterfall

The ceremony took place at a secluded waterfall on private land. Erla Sigurlaug led the ceremony, incorporating humor, reflection, and tradition. She opened by referencing Christina and Albert’s shared sense of humor, which immediately set a relaxed tone.

They included a handfasting ceremony, symbolizing the joining of their lives, followed by an Old Nordic ritual where they shared Icelandic whisky from a horn. Albert chose a 12 year old whisky to represent their 12 years together, unaware that the ritual would involve drinking from the horn multiple times.

Christina carried a bouquet that included sunflowers, honoring a close friend who had passed away years earlier. She also wore her grandmother’s diamond heart necklace. These details were subtle but deeply meaningful.

“Our ceremony was intimate but truly it represented us, especially our sense of humor.” Christina said.

Exploring the Valley

After the ceremony, they continued exploring parts of Þórsmörk valley. Plans shifted due to weather, with heavy rain preventing access to a glacier area. Lia adjusted the route, adding hidden caves instead.

Flexibility shaped this part of the day. Christina and Albert were open to changes, trusting the plan and the people guiding them. The experience felt collaborative rather than rigid.

South Coast Stops and a Quiet Ending

Back along the south coast, Christina and Albert stopped at Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey, and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach as the weather shifted constantly. Sunlight moved through fog, wind intensified, and rain passed through in quick changes. At Dyrhólaey, a rainbow appeared during golden light, marking one of the final moments along the coast.

At one cliffside location, the wind became especially strong. Albert held onto Christina to steady her, and despite earlier concerns about wind, the moment became one of her favorite memories from the day.

After nearly twelve hours, they changed into regular clothes and met their friends at a pizza parlor. Sitting down, eating pizza, and drinking beer provided a grounding end to the day. It wasn’t until they checked into their hotel that evening that Christina saw herself in a full-length mirror for the first time all day, and they laughed together at how little the appearance of things had mattered.

Iceland did not perform for them. It simply existed as it does, and they met it where they were. In doing so, they created a wedding day that felt personal, present, and entirely their own.
