Hey y’all! I’m MJ, an American gone highlander – planning and photographing elopements around Scotland.
I grew up in the suburbs of New York, and studied Environmental Sciences and Wildlife Biology at the University of Vermont (go cats!), and somehow ended up in Scotland. That’s just how life works.
I met my husband in Southeast Asia during a post-graduation backpacking trip around the world. He was seriously wearing a kilt when we met. We eloped in Australia after just a year together,
because when you know, you know – as I’m sure you know.
I’ve been to 43 countries, lived in 4 of them, and constantly travel between the US and Scotland. In my free time, I like to go hiking, kayaking, and camping! I’ve formally trained as an outdoor guide, and have led many group trips in the outdoors. I will always have a deep passion for nature, and love to slow down and enjoy birdwatching when I find the time. I also love reading, playing board games, and sitting by our firepit out back!
My dad is Greek, and grew up on a really small island. His father – my grandfather – was the first photographer on the island. He took photos of everything. After he passed, my dad took on all his negatives. As I grew up, I watched my dad dedicate his life to scanning and sharing these photos with friends and family from the island – thousands of photos of ancestors, landscapes of the old island, peaceful moments in the sun.
I never officially picked up photography. It’s always been a part of me. Photography has always been my way to process daily life, collect memories, and slow down time as I felt it slip away. It’s my excuse to see beautiful places, and do amazing things.
Other than being an eloper myself, I came into the world of elopements thanks to a friend. Like most people, her wedding was postponed due to the pandemic. They were so stressed out, and something that was meant to be full of love and celebration became a heavy weight that dragged them down every single day. Weddings are not supposed to be stressful.
I encouraged them to do what felt right to them. Not to wait until it was convenient for everyone else. So they decided to scoot up to the highlands, declare their love for each other, and figure the rest out later. And I was lucky enough to photograph it for them.
Now I work as an elopement planner at one of the top elopement companies in Scotland. I work with loads of international couples every year planning bespoke elopements all over the country. I know all the in’s and out’s of eloping in Scotland, where to go, what to do, which places to stay. I’m a living, breathing Google Map. When you work with me, you gain access to all my local knowledge and advice – not just as a photographer, but as an outdoor guide, an organised planner, and a travel expert.
All in all, I have always loved nature, exploration, and creativity – and I’m constantly inspired by how they all magically collide in the world of elopements. I feel so lucky every day to help couples escape mainstream wedding traditions, and choose adventure over expectations. Welcome to the best decision you’ll ever make!
