Meet Heather and Shaun

When Heather and Shaun got engaged in August, they were already on the same page: no long engagement, no getting bogged down by things that didn’t feel like them. Instead, they craved something more intentional, more personal, and grounded. They wanted a celebration that prioritized presence and felt like home.

“We made up the term ‘macro-eloping’ because we wanted to maintain that intimate, candid feeling. A micro-wedding or mini version of a traditional wedding ceremony still felt too performative for us.”

With just 30 guests, they created a day grounded in joy and togetherness. It was full of laughter, snacks, quiet moments, and spontaneous adventures in the rainforest. That spirit guided their entire day of an intimate yet celebratory gathering, rooted in joy, creativity, and care for the environment. This is a prime example of how your wedding is only defined by the parameters that you deem important, so feel free to throw the rule book and create your own.

Their connection to nature runs deep, therefore, honoring the land they stood on was as important as any other part of their day. For them, a winter elopement at Lake Quinault embodied the perfect balance of adventure, coziness, and deep meaning. The lodge was a place that felt like a world all its own, with its blend of German, Indigenous, and other-worldly architecture surrounded by mossy trees, ferns, and the cool, cozy atmosphere they had imagined. It wasn’t just a beautiful spot; it was a place where they could fully embrace their love for nature and each other.

Their Planning Process and Vision

Photography by K Thrash Photo

Their planning process kicked off immediately after their engagement. On the drive home, they made their guest list, and within a week, they locked in their wedding date. From there, it was full speed ahead.

In the first month, while Heather was in Germany finishing her master’s, they secured all major vendors. She stayed up late calling vendors, including their florist from Olympia Blooms.

“We talked until 2 a.m. because we had such a connection,” Heather recalls. She also found her dream dress while in Germany.

Shaun took charge of the details, becoming an Etsy wizard for everything from decorations to small touches. He’s the more detail-oriented one, and even though it meant having key elements shipped with less than a month to go before the elopement, it all came together perfectly.

What stands out in their planning process is how much Heather and Shaun valued working with vendors who understood their vision. It wasn’t just about finding the right vendor. It was about finding people who genuinely cared and were willing to go the extra mile to bring our day to life. Their connection with each vendor was a true partnership, built on trust and shared excitement.

Kierstyn, their photographer, quickly became an integral part of that journey.

“Each meeting felt like talking with friends,” she says. “Shaun was especially hands-on in the planning. He even suggested the first look location, which is rare for me!”

Permits and Leave No Trace (LNT)

Photography by K Thrash Photo

Washington consistently ranks as one of the top elopement destinations, and it’s easy to see why. With an incredible variety of breathtaking locations all within easy reach, couples have endless options for crafting their perfect day. But with this popularity comes responsibility—knowing the rules and respecting the land is key to preserving these beautiful places for future couples to enjoy.

Heather and Shaun held both their ceremony and reception at Lake Quinault Lodge, which meant no additional permits were needed. However, Olympic National Park typically requires permits for groups larger than 5, including your photographer, so it’s essential to check ahead if you’re planning to use public lands.

Regardless of your guest count, it’s important to stay up to date with any park regulations. You can find more information about eloping in Olympic National Park here.

Throughout the day, the couple was intentional about caring for the space they were in. They followed Leave No Trace principles by staying on designated trails and ensuring nothing was left behind.

Instead of a traditional send-off, they released tiny biodegradable paper boats with beeswax and acorn candles into the lake, and made sure to retrieve every last one. Kierstyn noted that even their floral installation was removed before the night was over, leaving the area better than they found it.

What are your top tips for couples eloping in Olympic National Park?

"Plan ahead! While this park is open year round and offers a lot of perks, it's also extremely popular! Planning ahead, obtaining a permit, and finding a photographer who is familiar with popular places, and also hidden gems, is crucial to having a great experience. Most of Olympic National Park is a temperate rainforest so it rains A LOT - that's why it's so green and luscious (which we love)! Be prepared for changes in weather, and expect some rain, especially outside of the summer months."

Getting Ready at the Lodge & First Look at Merriman Falls

Photography by K Thrash Photo

The morning started slowly and sweetly at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge. Tucked away in the quiet coziness of the lodge, Heather and Shaun got ready with their families.

For their first look, they chose Merriman Falls, and it couldn’t have been more magical. The waterfall was flowing, the rain was steady, and the entire moment felt straight out of a movie.

“She was excited to embrace the elements,” said their photographer, Kierstyn. “She literally ran around near the waterfalls in full wedding attire.”

Evidently, that’s the kind of magic that happens when you let go of perfection and stay present. It wasn’t about posing or chasing the “perfect” photo, their first look was about soaking in the moment, despite the rain and all. They laughed, twirled through the street, and embraced the joy of finally being together after the whirlwind of planning. For Shaun, this moment stood out as his favorite.

“It was the first time I got to be with you with zero distractions,” he told Heather later.

After 24 hours apart and so many moving pieces coming together, it was the first time he felt like they could just be, no more tasks, just presence and connection.

Pro Tip: First looks aren’t just for traditional weddings. They offer a private, intentional pause before your ceremony. They give you a chance to ground yourselves, share a breath, and really feel the day.

Exploring the Rainforest & A Lakeside Ceremony

Photography by K Thrash Photo

After their first look, Heather and Shaun made their way to the Tree of Life for bridal party portraits. Surrounded by towering roots and coastal mist, the setting felt grounded and rooted in their future together.

Then it was back to Lake Quinault Lodge, where their ceremony took place lakeside. Friends and family gathered beneath the trees, some having traveled across the country to witness this idyllic, special moment.

Just as they stepped into place, the rain softened. It felt like nature itself was pausing to let everyone take it all in and bask in the moment of Heather and Shaun joining as one.

Heather and Shaun exchanged vows in front of the lake they love, framed by ferns, moss, and a handcrafted floral installation by Olympia Blooms. The design was simple, wild, and full of intention. A delicate decor piece which perfectly echoed the quiet magic of this lush rainforest wedding.

Handmade Details & A Biodegradable Paper Boat Send-Off

Photography by K Thrash Photo

Heather poured her heart into every detail of the day. Back home in Nashville, she hand-crafted the place settings, menus, and even the candles used in their lakeside send-off.

Together, she and Shaun designed tiny paper boats made from biodegradable materials. Each one holding a beeswax candle set in an acorn cap. After floating them on the water, they made sure to retrieve every last one before the night was over. These simple moments are the enchanting ones you don’t forget about and that you’ll be happy you did.

Instead of sparklers or confetti, their  guests followed them down a softly lit forest trail, lanterns in hand. Their send-off felt like a scene from a storybook; quiet, meaningful, and entirely their own. There was a mystical reverence as they stepped into this new chapter, surrounded by friends and family.

Their deep love for each other was matched by the way they honored the land and the people around them.

“They exuded love and kindness,” Kierstyn shared. “They respected the Earth, honored the place, and made sure everything left no trace.”

Estimated Cost For This Elopement

Heather and Shaun spent just over $27,000 on their destination macro-elopement.

They allocated their budget to cover:

  • ✈️ Travel and lodging for themselves
  • 🏞️ Venue rental and catering at Lake Quinault Lodge
  • 📸 Photography with K. Thrash Photo
  • 🌸 Floral design by Olympia Blooms
  • 📅 Day-of coordination (courtesy of Heather’s childhood best friend!)
  • 🕯️ Handcrafted décor, menus, and candles
  • 🚐 Weekend logistics for their 30-person group

They were thoughtful about every decision, and prioritized what felt most meaningful to them.

“We knew we wanted to spend on our photographer and our food. Those were our non-negotiables,” Heather shared. “Still images felt more true to us, and Kierstyn captured everything we hoped for.” Without doubt, it was the best money they ever spent.

They opted to cater through their venue, which helped simplify logistics for everyone staying on-site, and offered savings by planning in the off-season. They embraced surprise splurges, too.

“Our bonus item that we didn’t know we wanted to spend on (until we did) was flowers, because we were absolutely floored by Olympia Blooms designs. We are both so creative and she made us swoon.”

With support from their families, Heather and Shaun were able to invest in a day that truly reflected them.

“We’re both pretty budget-conscious, but we were reminded that this moment was meant to be invested in. Some of our family inheritance had even been set aside for this day, and we’re so glad we listened. We’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
