Imagine waking up at 3 AM, not for an early flight or work deadline, but to witness the most important sunrise of your life. That’s exactly what Ashley and Jacob did, driving through the darkness to reach Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park, where they would exchange vows as the first light painted Half Dome in golden hues.
Their story isn’t just about choosing a stunning backdrop, it’s about two people who knew that their love deserved something as extraordinary as the landscape around them. What started as a practical decision to save money became an adventure that gave them something priceless: a wedding day that was entirely, authentically theirs.
With photographer Alyssa Michele guiding their journey, Ashley and Jacob’s elopement became a celebration of not just their love, but their shared spirit of adventure.

Meet Ashley & Jacob

Ashley and Jacob’s elopement journey began with a simple realization: they wanted something different.
“It mostly started as a way to save money,” Ashley admits, “but both of us were also not super into the idea of a big day and event surrounding us. So the idea of just getting married with just the two of us sounded perfect.”
What they discovered was that eloping wasn’t just about what they were saying no to, it was about what they were saying yes to. Yes to adventure. Yes to intimacy. Yes to a celebration that reflected who they truly were as a couple.
“We were also able to go on this adventure and an amazing honeymoon after for less than what a traditional wedding typically costs,” Ashley shared.
Originally, their hearts were set on Sequoia National Park. Ashley had dreamed of being surrounded by the ancient giants, those towering trees that seem to hold centuries of wisdom in their rings. But sometimes the best adventures come from unexpected detours. When wildfire threats near Sequoia created potential smoke concerns, their photographer Alyssa recommended a change of plans: Yosemite National Park.
“I’m so glad we did,” Ashley reflects. “Eloping during the sunrise with the mountains in the background was breathtaking. This was my first time visiting, and once I was there in person, it was such an otherworldly experience. Just how grand and beautiful it was. It really made our elopement so special.”
Their love story reminds us that sometimes the most beautiful moments come not from rigid planning, but from being open to where life, and love, might lead you.
Permits & Leave No Trace in Yosemite

Photography by Alyssa Michele Photo
Yosemite National Park requires a wedding permit for all ceremonies, and securing yours should be one of your first steps when planning an elopement here. The good news? Yosemite is incredibly accommodating, even for last-minute changes.
When Ashley and Jacob needed to switch from Sequoia to Yosemite just a month before their wedding, they were able to secure their permit with time to spare.
“We got a last-minute permit for Yosemite (you need to get it 30 days before and Yosemite is very accommodating),” photographer Alyssa Michele shares.
This flexibility proved crucial when wildfires threatened their original Sequoia plans, allowing them to pivot without losing their dream elopement.
Beyond permits, eloping in Yosemite means becoming a steward of one of America’s most treasured landscapes. The park’s Leave No Trace principles aren’t just suggestions – they’re essential for preserving this natural cathedral for future couples and visitors. This means staying on designated trails, packing out everything you bring in, and working with experienced vendors who understand how to celebrate your love while protecting the environment.
Photographer Alyssa Michele emphasizes the importance of timing:
“Start at sunrise to avoid crowds and make it all about you! Find a photographer who knows all the secret spots at Glacier Point since it can get busy even at sunrise.”
Starting at sunrise gives you a quieter, more intimate experience and helps lessen the strain on Yosemite’s busiest locations.
When you choose to elope here, you’re stepping into something bigger than a single moment,; you’re joining the rhythm of the land and helping keep it wild and beautiful for others, too.
Practicing Leave No Trace principles in Yosemite is crucial to preserving its beauty.
A Day Written in Mountain Light

The 3 AM Adventure Begins
There’s something kind of surreal about waking up at 3 AM on your wedding day, especially when it’s not about last-minute preparations or wedding day jitters, but about embarking on an adventure together.
Ashley and Jacob’s day began in the pre-dawn darkness of Fresno, where they’d spent the night before their sunrise ceremony.
“We stayed in Fresno during our trip, and we had to wake up at 3 AM to get ready (I did my own hair and makeup), so we could drive up to Yosemite for a sunrise elopement,” Ashley recalls. “Just the excitement of that morning was so memorable.”
In the soft glow of their room, Ashley did her makeup and styled her hair, slipping into a gown embroidered with delicate leaves that mirrored the wild beauty of the park. Jacob wore a dark green suit that was a bold, perfect contrast to Yosemite’s granite cliffs and pine-dotted landscape.
The drive through the darkness toward Yosemite felt like stepping into another world. Twisting through the mountain roads, their excitement grew with each mile. They were headed toward something extraordinary; a moment timed just right, when they’d exchange vows as the sun rose over Half Dome, spilling light into the valley and marking the start of something unforgettable.

First Look at Glacier Point

At Glacier Point’s amphitheater, with the first light just starting to touch the horizon, Ashley and Jacob saw each other for the first time that morning. The air was still, the landscape unfolding quietly around them. Surrounded by towering cliffs and tall pines, they stood together in the hush of a moment they would carry with them forever, calm and completely connected.
“We started their day with a first look at the glacier point amphitheater, it was so sweet,” photographer Alyssa Michele remembers.
With Half Dome looming in the distance and the valley stretching out below them, they had this iconic viewpoint entirely to themselves.
The quiet connection they shared in that moment set the tone for everything that followed. It was just the two of them, fully present, taking in the weight of the day and the beauty of the place they chose to begin it.

Ceremony at Sunrise

After their first look, Ashley and Jacob made their way to a quiet little spot at Glacier Point where their officiant, Erica Rose, was waiting. It felt like a hidden hideaway, completely private and peaceful, just for them.
Their photographer Alyssa Michele remembers:
“We met up with Erica and headed to this secret spot for their ceremony. Honestly, it was a total dream. We wrapped up the ceremony before the sun even came up, then did portraits after signing their marriage license.”
Ashley shared about their last-minute vow writing:
“Since we both procrastinated, we both wrote our vows down the day before. Once landing in Fresno the day before our elopement, we realized we brought nothing to write our vows on. So we decided to go to the store and buy some blank greeting cards to write our vows in. The cards ended up being so special and ended up being beautiful keepsakes. They also looked so nice in pictures.”
As they read their handwritten vows, the sun rose over Half Dome, spreading soft gold and pink light across the valley. Surrounded by the grandeur of Yosemite, their promises became part of the landscape, quiet, powerful, and lasting, just like the love they were celebrating.
Ancient Giants at Mariposa Grove

After their ceremony and portraits at Glacier Point, Ashley and Jacob’s adventure continued. Ashley had always dreamed of being surrounded by sequoia trees, and even though their original Sequoia National Park plans had changed, Yosemite offered its own ancient giants.
“Ashley has a love for sequoia trees so we then drove over to Mariposa Grove in Yosemite,” Alyssa explains. “We hopped on the bus and explored the giant sequoias. It was a beautiful day to remember.”
Walking among trees that have stood for thousands of years, Ashley and Jacob found themselves in a living cathedral. These ancient sequoias, some of the largest and oldest living things on Earth, provided the perfect finale to their wedding day. The contrast between the granite grandeur of Glacier Point and the gentle giants of Mariposa Grove gave their elopement a completeness that felt deeply intentional.
“After our elopement was over and photography was complete, we spent the rest of the day driving around the park and it was just so incredible,” Ashley remembers.
Their wedding day became a full adventure, exploring one of America’s most beloved national parks as newlyweds.

Advice from Ashley & Jacob

Planning an elopement requires both vision and flexibility, and Ashley and Jacob’s experience offers valuable insights for couples considering their own adventure. Their journey from Sequoia to Yosemite, their early morning start, and their focus on what truly mattered provides practical wisdom for anyone dreaming of an intimate celebration.
What they learned about planning:
“Start early! Depending on where you elope, photographers and ministers could be limited. Make sure you reach out early to secure your date,” Ashley advises.
Their experience shows that while flexibility is important, having your key vendors locked in early gives you options when unexpected changes arise.
On staying flexible:
“Remember you might have to be flexible with sudden changes and have a backup ready.” Their last-minute switch from Sequoia to Yosemite could have been stressful, but with the right team and mindset, it became part of their adventure story.
On the importance of research:
“Take your time and thoroughly research each location you might want to elope in. Remember you might be wearing formal clothes, so is it easy to access? Do you have to hike to it? Does your location require permits to perform a ceremony?”
Ashley’s practical approach helped them prepare for everything from permit requirements to the 3 AM wake-up call.
On what really matters:
“Overall just try to enjoy the planning and the excitement of the adventure. Eloping for us was such an intimate and romantic experience, and it was great only being the two of us (Also much less stress when planning and coordination than a traditional wedding).”
Looking back:
“I don’t think I would do anything differently. It all went so perfectly and I was so grateful for that.”

Ashley and Jacob’s elopement proves sometimes the best stories come from saying yes to the unexpected. What began as a practical way to save money turned into an adventure that was completely their own.

Standing at Glacier Point as the sun rose over Half Dome, surrounded by ancient sequoias that have witnessed countless mornings like this, Ashley and Jacob didn’t just get married.
