Deciding to elope was not an easy decision. My now-husband and I knew that we didn’t want the traditional wedding; neither of us likes being on display, and spending so much money on just ONE EXHAUSTING DAY seemed silly. We love to travel, and we had discussed a trip by train - something neither of us had ever done - and possibly incorporating that into our wedding. We decided to reach out for help.
Enter Terri. From the very first message, Terri was a dream. She and her assistant/partner-in-crime, Sarah Kay, were there to help us figure out what we wanted and how we would do it. We knew we wanted to take the train out west, but to where? Terri helped us narrow down our options - Horseshoe Bend, the Grand Canyon, and eventually Sedona. We wanted our wedding to be our first wedded adventure, and Terri was just the person we needed.
In deciding what we wanted to do, we realized it was going to be next to impossible to include all of our family and friends that we would want there with us; we decided to narrow the guest list down to an extremely intimate number: six (me, my husband, Terri, Sarah Kay (who would officiate), and our two witnesses). In doing so, it offered up so many more options; we rented out UTV’s for the day, and Terri offered to be tour guide to some great remote photo opportunities. We chose a Tuesday for our wedding day to minimize the amount of tourists and unwelcome photobombers. Terri helped us figure out the legalities of our marriage license, and Sarah Kay helped with the more intricate details. Sarah Kay, a skilled coppersmith, even created my husband’s lapel!
We had everything in order. The countdown was on. Only days away from the wedding, we received news that the railroad worker unions were potentially going on strike, affecting the Amtrak route we would be taking. Routes had been canceled the day before ours was scheduled, and we waited in agony to see if they could come to a negotiation. Terri and Sarah Kay hopped into action, offering alternate ideas in case things would go sour. Luckily the unions were able to come to an agreement, and the crisis was averted.
With a sign of relief, we met up with Terri and Sarah Kay the morning of our wedding. To our midwestern surprise, it was raining - in the desert! No worries though - they’d planned for everything, bringing umbrellas, a tent to change in, and TONS of extra supplies. Sarah Kay officiated our marriage, and we continued on our adventure throughout the WHOLE day. I honestly don’t know how Terri has the energy to do this all day, everyday, but I thank our lucky stars she does. We even got a double rainbow at sunset!
All in all, living in another state across the country, we put our trust in Terri’s hands - very nerve wracking - but through all of our calls and virtual meetings, we feel like we got to know her as more than just our photographer. Both she and Sarah Kay became our friends.
Terri and Sarah Kay - thank you for ALL of your time, energy, and BEAUTIFUL photos. Our day would not have been the amazing day we had without you. Sending all of our midwestern love.
