Not all weddings fit inside four walls, and for Tristan and Olivia, that was the whole point. They traded tradition for desert skies, off-road trails, and uninterrupted connection in the wild terrain of Big Bend National Park. With their three kids along for the ride and a shared love for adventure guiding every choice, their day became more than a celebration, it became a memory that felt unmistakably them.

Meet Tristan & Olivia

Tristan and Olivia’s story started with a simple moment, a chance meeting at a local bank that led to a fair date and, eventually, a life of shared adventures.
“They love off-roading, traveling, and having fun with their three kiddos,” Marissa shares.
That fun-first spirit was at the heart of every decision they made for their wedding day. Instead of the pressure of tradition, they chose freedom, fun, and quality time together in one of the most remote and stunning landscapes in the country.

Their Vision and Planning Process

What made their vision so special was its clarity: they didn’t want fluff, they wanted fun. Tristan & Olivia are big into offroading and really wanted a place that would allow them to celebrate with their favorite hobby. Originally contemplating traveling to Alaska, they ultimately decided on a tighter timeline at a location they could drive to. Since they had already explored Moab earlier in the summer and wanted to choose somewhere new for their vows, Big Bend was the perfect fit.
It was also deeply important to them that their kids were involved in a meaningful way, and that their elopement felt like an experience they’d all remember.
“They were a dream to work with and really just wanted their day to feel FUN,” says Marissa.
With her help, they crafted a day around what mattered most.
“I help my eloping couples from start to finish,” she explains. “I aided in choosing a ceremony location, planning out a timeline, offering additional activities, guiding them through the permit process, acting as their legal officiant… and I was there to help celebrate every milestone along the way!”
From Sunrise to Starlight: A Full-Day Elopement in Big Bend

Olivia and Tristan’s elopement day was thoughtfully woven from quiet moments, family connection, and adventurous spirit—beginning before the sun even rose. Olivia got ready at Roadhouse Rentals in Terlingua, while Tristan prepped a few miles away with his parents. As the first light stretched across the desert, they shared an emotional first look outside their Airbnb.
“It was the perfect, quiet moment to kick off their day,” says photographer Marissa Forbis.
From there, they drove their Bronco into the heart of Big Bend, arriving at the mouth of Santa Elena Canyon—an awe-inspiring backdrop for a deeply personal ceremony surrounded by their closest family.
“The kiddos being included was incredibly important to them,” Marissa adds. “We made sure each of them had a special role and got to celebrate with their parents!”
After some joyful family portraits, the group returned to Terlingua for a casual lunch at the beloved Chili Pepper Cafe. It was the perfect pause to relax, recharge, and soak it all in. Once they’d hugged their kids goodbye, Olivia and Tristan set off for a more intimate adventure, just the two of them.
“We spent the rest of the day exploring Big Bend,” Marissa shares, “from the Chisos Mountains down to the desert near the border with Mexico.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky turned into a canvas of stars. “Their day didn’t end until we captured final portraits under the clearest night sky I have ever seen. A true testament to how magical full-day elopements can be.”
Personal Touches That Made It Theirs

What made this elopement feel so uniquely Tristan and Olivia? Every piece of it reflected their shared life and values. Olivia handcrafted her bouquet using antlers she found on her grandmother’s property in Missouri. Their Bronco wasn’t just transportation—it was part of the story.
“Involving off-roading and their Bronco was the truest nod to themselves as a couple that they ever could have asked for,” says Marissa.
Advice from the Photographer

If you’re considering a desert elopement like this one, Marissa has a few key tips:
“Keep weather in mind! Big Bend can get HOT. We were helped by the fact that we spent most of the day driving in the couple’s Bronco. Had we been hiking, I would suggest either a different time of year, or to focus time on sunrise & sunset/nightfall.”
And when it comes to designing your day?
“There is no cookie-cutter ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to elope! Want to include some loved ones for part of your day? Go for it. Want your day to be fully for you? That is totally rad. Multi-day elopements exist for a reason! Don’t give in to others’ opinions—lean into the advice from the professionals helping you craft your day, and just freakin’ ENJOY IT.”
Permits and Leave No Trace at Big Bend

If you’re eloping in Big Bend, it’s essential to plan responsibly.
“Big Bend has approved wedding ceremony locations that can be found on the NPS website,” Marissa says.
View the official list of permitted wedding locations here.
Respect the terrain, pack out everything you bring in, and work with vendors who are familiar with the area’s guidelines and climate. Your dream day shouldn’t come at the expense of this fragile, beautiful landscape.
Permits are also important because while many public places can be lenient, you need to make sure that local laws don’t require a permit or fee. Working with an experienced elopement planner or photographer can definitely help you double-check these legal requirements. That is why we highly recommend partnering up with one of our members!
Tips for Your Big Bend Elopement Adventure
Eloping in a place as wild and remote as Big Bend takes a little extra preparation—but that’s part of the magic. Here are a few tips to help your experience go smoothly:
💧 Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Big Bend is dry, hot, and rugged. We suggest bringing your own large water containers. Staying hydrated will make everything more enjoyable, and essential to having the best adventure possible.
⛈️ Have a Plan B. Weather in the desert can shift fast—sunshine one minute, flash floods the next. We always recommend having a backup ceremony spot or timeline tweaks ready to go, just in case.
🗑️ Leave no trace, always. There aren’t many trash facilities inside the park, so please plan to pack out everything you bring in, and dispose of it responsibly once you’re back in town or at home.
⚡ Come powered up. Whether you’re keeping your phones charged for navigation or powering lights in your Airbnb, a backup power source can be a lifesaver.
🩹 Don’t forget a first aid kit. Even if it’s just for hiking blisters or a bug bite, you’ll want to be prepared when you’re far from town. Big Bend’s beauty is in its remoteness, but that also means fewer resources nearby.
Final Reflection

As Marissa says, “This is the coolest adventure ever—treat it like one.”
Whether you’re bringing your family along or escaping into the wild with just the two of you, that’s the magic of eloping: you get to write your own rules.
