Alex & Kyle’s Dreamy San Juan Mountains Elopement Adventure

Alex and Kyle didn’t want a wedding. They wanted a day they’d actually remember. So they packed their bags, headed to the San Juan Mountains, and said their vows at an alpine lake so remote you need a Jeep just to get there. No stress about seating charts or whether Aunt Linda would like the centerpieces—just tea in bed at a historic hotel, a typewriter they couldn’t figure out, and the kind of laughter that comes when you realize nothing has to be perfect to be exactly right.

Captured by the talented Meagan Lawler Photography , who has spent years exploring these rugged peaks and knows them like the back of her hand, this elopement perfectly balances spontaneity with thoughtful planning. Meagan’s expertise in navigating both the logistics and the soul of mountain elopements shines through every moment of Alex and Kyle’s story.

Meet Alex and Kyle

Alex and Kyle are the kind of couple who embrace life with infectious joy and genuine curiosity. When they first reached out to Meagan, they were excited about exploring an unfamiliar area and were immediately drawn to “the blues & greens of the San Juans.” Their approach to their elopement day perfectly reflected their personalities—open to adventure, present in each moment, and completely focused on each other.

As Meagan beautifully describes them: “Alex & Kyle spent so much of the day just soaking it all in, and being the most giggly and in love sweethearts. It was the absolute best working with them & their infectious personalities!”

Their Vision & Planning

What made Alex and Kyle’s elopement planning process so special was their trust in the journey. They knew they wanted “a mix of mountains, trees, and a beautiful alpine lake,” and when Meagan showed them options in the San Juan Mountains, they immediately knew they’d found their spot.

The planning process with Meagan was comprehensive and supportive.

As she explains: “From the moment a couple reaches out, I’m in it with them—cheering them on, helping them dream big, and guiding them every step of the way. I don’t just show up with a camera on elopement day. I help my couples plan the whole experience. That means everything from scouting epic locations and building out custom timelines to recommending trusted vendors, lodging, and even what layers to pack for Colorado’s wild mountain weather.”

This level of support proved invaluable, especially when it came to understanding the unique considerations of eloping in such a remote and beautiful location.

Morning Bliss at The Western Hotel

Alex and Kyle’s day began with intentional slowness at The Western Hotel—a place Meagan calls her favorite for good reason. Instead of rushing through getting ready, these two savored the morning: drinking tea, snuggling up together, and attempting to use a vintage typewriter that absolutely none of them could figure out. “Watching them figure it out together was such a fun, lighthearted moment,” Meagan recalls. “We were all laughing the whole time.”

That’s the thing about The Western—it’s not just accommodation, it’s an experience. The historic details, the slower pace, the way it encourages you to be present rather than performative. For Meagan, watching couples choose this spot is always special, and seeing Alex and Kyle type out their elopement date and location on that old typewriter? Pure magic. Unscripted, joyful, and exactly the kind of memory that makes a day unforgettable.

When Plans Change for the Better

Of course, even the most intentional days have their curveballs. When their Jeep driver ended up running about an hour late, Alex and Kyle could have spiraled—but instead, they leaned in. They grabbed drinks at the Western’s bar, FaceTimed family members they couldn’t be with in person, and just existed together without the pressure of a ticking clock. Meagan watched it all unfold and couldn’t help but notice how the delay actually added to the day rather than taking away from it. “It was a good reminder that sometimes the best moments come from the unplanned ones,” she says, and the relaxed, go-with-the-flow energy that followed proved her right.

The Mountain Adventure Begins

Once the Jeep finally arrived, it was time for the real adventure to begin. The drive up into the San Juans was everything you’d hope for: winding mountain roads, wildflowers lining the path, and that feeling of getting farther and farther from the everyday world. When they finally reached their ceremony spot, a hidden alpine lake surrounded by peaks and complete solitude, Alex and Kyle’s reaction said it all. They were in awe. Meagan had been to this spot before (it’s one of her favorites in the San Juans), but watching them see it for the first time? That never gets old.

“They were completely in awe, and it made the day feel even more magical,” she says.

Vows, Exploration, and Summer Magic

The ceremony itself was intimate and exactly what it needed to be: just Alex, Kyle, and the mountains as their witness, as they exchanged the words that mattered most.

After they made their promises complete, they explored ridgelines, wandered through wildflowers, and soaked in every bit of that perfect Colorado summer evening until well after sunset. The greens were vibrant, the blues were endless, and the weather cooperated in that way that feels like the universe giving you a gift. It was the kind of day that reminds you why people fall in love with the mountains in the first place.

Final Reflection

Looking back on Alex and Kyle’s elopement, what stands out most isn’t just the stunning location or perfect summer weather. It’s how effortlessly the day reflected who they are as a couple. “What made their elopement feel so personal was simply them,” Meagan reflects. “Alex and Kyle brought such a sweet, joyful energy to the day—always laughing, always present, and totally go-with-the-flow.”

They didn’t need elaborate traditions or over-the-top gestures to make the day meaningful. They just needed each other, the mountains, and the freedom to be completely themselves.  From fumbling with a typewriter to embracing an hour-long delay, from saying vows at a secret alpine lake to exploring until the sun set, every moment was shaped by their genuine excitement and infectious joy.

“Their personalities shaped the entire experience, making everything feel natural, fun, and effortless,” Meagan says. “It wasn’t about elaborate traditions, but about fully embracing the moment together, and that made it incredibly special.”

And really, isn’t that what eloping is all about? Stripping away everything that doesn’t matter so you can focus on everything that does.

Permits & Leave No Trace in the San Juan Mountains

If you’re considering an elopement in the San Juans, there are a few important things to know before you go. Many areas around Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride sit on public lands like national forests or BLM land, which means permits might be required depending on your group size and specific location. Some spots are more informal and don’t require permits for small, intimate elopements, but popular trailheads and designated wilderness areas often have special use regulations in place.

Meagan always helps her couples navigate these requirements ahead of time.

“I always help my couples check in with the right land agencies to make sure we’re following the current rules,” she explains.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes details that makes working with a photographer who knows the area so valuable.

Just as important as permits? Leave No Trace principles. These alpine environments are incredibly fragile, and protecting them means being intentional about how we interact with the landscape. Stay on established trails, avoid picking wildflowers (no matter how tempting), and pack out every single bit of trash. But there’s another aspect of Leave No Trace that often gets overlooked: what we share online.

“One often overlooked but crucial part of LNT is being mindful of what we share online,” Meagan notes. “Some of these locations simply aren’t equipped to handle a surge in visitors, so I encourage my couples to keep exact geotags vague or private to help preserve these special places for others to enjoy responsibly.”

It’s about more than just following rules. It’s about making sure the places that made your day so special remain that way for the couples who come after you.
