About This Elopement

“Adrianne and Billy had a colorful elopement on New England’s tallest mountain, complete with bubbles and custom details! They started their wedding day in their hotel room at the base of the mountain with a first look and private vows on their balcony before driving up Mt Washington Auto Road in their jeep, taking in the foggy landscape and rugged terrain.

Adrianne created hot pink stickers that read ‘Just married on Mt Washinton’ a play on the stickers given to any car that drives to the summit that read ‘This car climbed Mt Washington’. They led their few guests, immediate family, down to a private overlook for the ceremony. Their guests were coordinated in the wedding colors of pink, yellow, and tan which contrasted beautifully against the fog and New Hampshire landscape.

As Adrianne and Billy shared their first kiss, their guests used pink bubble guns to shower them and celebrate! After, they cut their white heart-shaped cake, which was made by Adrianne and her mom, right on the mountain! They ended their elopement at Lake Winnipesaukee, getting ice cream and going for a boat ride, their favorite things to do together. Every detail of Adrianne and Billy’s elopement (which was mostly DIY) was well thought out and intentional, making for a very unique elopement day!” [Bridget, the photographer]

Permits and Planning for Your Mt Washington Elopement

Mt Washington is the tallest mountain in New England and the summit is a very fragile alpine zone. The landscape and vegetation are very sensitive so visitors must be cautious of where they are standing and walking to ensure they are not causing damage. The best practice is to stay on the trail and if you do need to step off the trail, then do so by standing on a rock or other durable surface.

Permits are only required if there are more than 75 people present during the event.” [Bridget, the photographer]

Top Tips During Your Elopement

“The weather on Mt Washington is extremely unpredictable and usually much much colder than the weather at the base of the mountain. Be prepared for wind, fog, rain, cool temperatures, and even snow depending on what month you are getting married – and always have a backup plan. Adrianne and Billy were hoping for a bright sunny day and chose a ceremony spot with rolling hills in the background.

On their wedding day, they had to switch locations because the dense fog left that location too exposed to elements and instead opted for their backup location which was protected by trees and a bit lower than the summit.” [Bridget, the photographer]

Deciding to Elope

“Neither of us ever dreamt of a big/traditional wedding, and having been in a handful of wedding parties over the last few years solidified that we’d prefer to do something more intimate. While a giant party with all your friends can be a great time, the pressure of throwing said party and being the center of attention for the whole day was just not it for us.

We wanted to honor our love in a way that felt more true to us – and with only our immediate family as guests and one of Adrianne’s best friends marrying us.” [The couple]

Planning Process

“We’ll preface this by saying the hardest part of planning this was keeping it a secret aside from those who were included.

While we didn’t want a wedding, we knew we wanted a memorable day with dope photos so finding the right photographer was the priority. Adrianne (the creative in the relationship) scoured Instagram for adventure elopement photographers to find someone whose style matched her vision. We kept going back to Bridget’s blog post and Instagram feed and were obsessed.

Once we booked our date with Bridget, she was the most helpful in helping plan everything! She sent us her elopement planning guide and had us fill out a couple’s surveys to help get to know us and what we wanted in our day.

Just because we were eloping didn’t mean that there weren’t still lots of decisions to be made! Adrianne knew that she wanted the entire day to look and feel a specific way – with only 8 of us there in total, everything had to be cohesive and in the color scheme – sunset pinks, yellows, and oranges. Everyone’s outfits were picked with care – a custom green suit (Indochino) for Billy, pale yellow for bright pink for Adrianne’s mom, pale yellow for our friend Sonya who officiated, tan suits with light orange or pink shirts for our dad’s and Billy’s brother.

Adrianne knew she wanted a few special touches – but didn’t want anything to be overly ‘wedding’ or ‘Mrs.’ theme. What’s the fun of something you can only use/wear one time?!? So she taught herself to embroider and decorate a white denim jacket with pink, yellow, and orange daisies (19 to be exact, for our wedding date), hiding the date under the collar.

And our favorite touch — Adrianne also put her graphic design background to work and created a twist on the classic Mt. Washington auto road bumper sticker that usually reads ‘This car climbed Mt. Washington’, changing it to say ‘Just married on Mt. Washington’ and making it pink!” [The couple]

Details About This Elopement

“All the details from Adrianne and Billy’s wedding were amazing! From the pink bubble guns to the custom ‘just married on Mt Washington’ sticker, hot pink shoes, stunning bouquet, and beautiful homemade cake, Ryan and I had so much fun photographing their day and the details!

My personal favorite detail was their custom stickers. Every visitor that drives up Mt Washington gets a sticker that reads ‘This car climbed Mt Washington’. Adrianne designed a hot pink sticker in the same design as the original ones but changed the text to read ‘just married on Mt Washington’. After the ceremony, they put it on their jeep together before heading to their other wedding events.” [Bridget, the photographer]

Memorable Moments During This Elopement

From the photographer:

“One of the craziest elements of their wedding, which isn’t evident in the photos, is that Billy very badly injured his foot just a few weeks before their elopement. He was on crutches and couldn’t walk after an accident that caused him to have a major injury on the bottom of his foot. Leading up to their elopement they weren’t sure if he was going to be able to get to their chosen ceremony site, walk around for photos, or if he was going to be on crutches all day.

We had activities planned and were coming up with alternative options in the days leading up, just in case we had to pivot. Billy was so careful heading up to the wedding and determined not to be on crutches and he did it! Very carefully he was able to spend most of the day off crutches and was able to get around everywhere they planned to go!”

From the couple:

“The weather… and it really kept us on our toes. In the week leading up to our elopement, the forecast was showing rain. We had come to terms with being lucky if we could see anything / didn’t get soaked, but were still determined to get married ON Mt. Washington. That morning we woke up to a slight mist, but we were hopeful for a small break in the weather. We could see some of the mountain peeking through the clouds.

After doing our first look on the covered hotel balcony, we headed up the auto road. As we got to the first location (our second choice) the clouds were parting above and below that spot – we couldn’t believe it. It was magical!

We quickly drove up to our preferred spot but discovered it was fogged in so went back down to the other spot and did our ceremony and most of our photos there. We’re convinced the photos came out way better than if it had been sunny – the fog added so much visual interest and created a really neat backdrop that contrasted with our bright colors.”
